Two injured in light airplane crash outside Stellenbosch

The South African Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the cause of a light aircraft crash in Kraaifontein.

The crash left two pilots injured.


The aircraft took off from Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday before crashing at the Bottelary Mountains near Kraaifontein.


"The SACAA was informed by the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of a Piper Cherokee PA28A aircraft accident, there were two occupants onboard with both of them sustaining serious injuries," said SACAA spokesperson Sisa Majola. 


"The aircraft also suffered substantial damage, the AIID has dispatching investigators on-site to start the process of evidence collection and to gather more information that will assist in defining the size and scope of the investigation.


"A preliminary report will be issued within 30 days from the day of the incident."


Emergency Services company Titanium Securitas, which responded to the crash, says the crash happened near the Kraaifontein sewage plant.


"The Titanium Securitas Medical Team and all the relevant role players made their way to the given address. On arrival two pilots were found outside the aircraft. One of whom sustained serious injuries and the other pilot sustained moderate injuries.


"Both patients were stabilized on scene by advanced life support paramedics. One patient was flown to a level one trauma centre by Air Mercy Service (AMS) and the other patient was transported via road to the appropriate facility," it said in a statement.
