Two suspects were fatally shot while attempting to hijack a policeman at gunpoint in Rabie Ridge on Wednesday.
It's believed the deceased approached the vehicle and ordered the officer and his son to get out of the car and hand over their belongings.
The officer fired shots at the armed men, killing both.
Two other suspects fled the scene.
"Initial investigation have confirmed that the firearm was taken during a house robbery reported at Norkem Park in April this year. Further investigations will be conducted to establish whether or not the firearm could have been used during the commission of other serious and violent crime," says Gauteng police spokesperson Mathapelo Peters.
