Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele says the Prasa employee was beaten and stoned to death, while the community member was allegedly shot by the company's security guards.

"Community members from the Holomisa informal settlement in Klipspruit were protesting and they decided to go and protest at the railway line.

"Prasa security guards then chased the protesting community away. During that commotion, community members were shot at.  One was killed while another was taken to hospital."

Makhubela says community members retaliated, after which the security guards opened fire.

"The community chased after the two security guards where a guard was cornered. The guard was beaten up and stoned.

"The guard died on the scene while the other was taken to hospital."

In reaction to the deaths, the South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) has appealed to Prasa to prioritise the safety of its staff.
