Two killed over illegal power connections

Two men were shot dead during clashes with municipal officials attempting to disconnect illegal electricity supply at an informal settlement, the Sunday Tribune reported on Sunday.
According to the newspaper, Malizo Fakaza and Nhlanhla Mkhize were killed during clashes between eThekwini municipal officials and residents at the New Germany informal settlement in Durban's Reservoir Hills suburb.
In all, nine people, including Fakaza and Mkhize, were shot by security guards.
The guards had accompanied officials who had been dispatched to disconnect the illegal electricity connections. They had been sent to disconnect cables drawing power from a nearby school and garages.
The newspaper quoted police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker as saying that the nine security guards had been arrested and their firearms had been seized.
They were charged with murder and attempted murder.
