Six countries, including two African nations, have officially been accepted to be part of the BRICS club of major emerging economies.
This was confirmed by BRICS chair, President Cyril Ramaphosa, during a media briefing on Thursday morning.
Ramaphosa delivered the summit declaration after three days of high-level discussions by leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
"As the five BRICS countries, we have reached an agreement on the guiding principles, standards, criteria and procedures of the BRICS expansion process, which has been in discussion for a very long while,” Ramaphosa said.
“We have consensus on the first phase of this expansion, and other phases will follow."
Ramaphosa says the summit decided to invite Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and UAE to become full members of BRICS.
Their membership will be effective from 1 January 2024.
He said foreign ministers have been tasked to further develop a BRICS partner country model and report back at the next summit.
