The unit says the two suspects approached a SASSA employee in Roodepoort with an offer to register old-age social grants.

Each application was accompanied by an R1 000 incentive to the employee.

Thirty-five applications were given to the employee, who made R38 000 by processing the fraudulent applications.

Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says the suspects were arrested after the SASSA employee blew the whistle.

"The initial batch of 15 applications was handed to the employee with R15 000 enticement to process the applications outside of the normal procedure.

"The second batch of 20 applications and R23,150 was handed over on Wednesday.

"Upon searching the suspects' vehicle, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were discovered by the team. SASSA was prejudiced R 38,150," she added.
