”On Tuesday, a dog handler from SARS [SA Revenue Services] customs stopped the truck from Zimbabwe, and after searching, it found a suspicious looking substance in a plastic bag,” said police spokeswoman Colonel Ronnel Otto.

”The substance was confiscated and tested positive for ephedrine, with a street value of more than R5 million.”

Ephedrine, which is used in the production of some cold and flu medicines, is classified as a Schedule 6 substance. A prescription is a prerequisite for possession of ephedrine containing medicines.

The substance is also used illegally to manufacture drugs such as tik.
