The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has confirmed two deaths of two runners who participated in the race on Sunday.

One runner died on scene before reaching the halfway mark, while another passed on at the hospital.
CMA Race Doctor, Dr Jeremy Boulter, says the runners have been identified as Mr Phakamile Ntshiza (Race No. 53126) and Mr Mzameleni Mthembu (Race No. 56904).
“While details are still unknown, Mr Ntshiza had reportedly passed away before he could be transported to hospital while running close to the halfway mark,” says Boulter.
“Mr Mthembu had suffered a heart attack whilst running along the Pinetown stretch of the Comrades route. He was taken to the Westville Hospital, where he later passed away.”
