Nearly two tons of dagga were seized by KwaZulu-Natal police in April in operations conducted on the South Africa-Lesotho border, police said on Thursday.
The 1890kg of dagga, worth an estimated R3.8 million, was seized from donkey trains travelling over the Ntonjelane Pass between South Africa and Lesotho, said Colonel Vincent Mdunge. "The operation covered the Upper Tugela, Winterton, Bergville, Giant Castle Pass and Mooi River." On one intercepted donkey train, police found a 37-year-old person in possession of 16 bags of dagga, a firearm and seven rounds of ammunition.
Eleven people were arrested over the course of the month for dagga possession and would appear in various courts depending on jurisdiction, said Mdunge.
