Two Tshwane metro cops arrested for misconduct

Two Tshwane metro police officers were arrested by their counterparts in Johannesburg over the weekend for operating outside their assigned area.

They are also accused of using a private vehicle.

The incident comes hot on the heels of acting Tshwane metro police chief Basil Nkhwashu issuing a directive to clean up corruption within the Tshwane metro police.

“The officers had no permission to operate outside their jurisdiction, and considering the recent spate of allegations against some TMPD members, the actions by the two officers are indeed questionable and very odd,” said Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink.

The Tshwane metro police’s integrity unit is also probing seven officers for using illegal breathalysers during two incidents over the long weekend.

In the first incident, five officers, who were operating outside their assigned area, allegedly extorted and robbed a member of the public.

In the second incident, two officers were caught using an unofficial breathalyser on a member of the public on the N1 near Lynnwood Road.

Meanwhile, the provincial community safety committee chairperson Bandile Masuku says the Tshwane and Johannesburg metro police are expected to appear before the provincial legislature on Tuesday.

“The purpose of this meeting is to allow these entities to give an account to the committee on their contribution in fighting crime in their respective Municipalities and their role in enforcing Municipal by-laws.

“This critical meeting will also serve to strengthen already existing strategic cooperation amongst various entities in the fight against crime.”

Members of the public are encouraged to ask metro police officers for their appointment certificates and to record their encounters with them in the form of videos and pictures of the officers and their vehicles.
