The clerk, Wilhelmina Burger, 58, and Sandra Nelson, 64, the shop assistant, appeared in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday, where magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg warned them to appear for trial on Wednesday.

According to the charge sheet, they worked at Van Zyl Motors, where both had access to the safe containing cash.

Prosecutor Simone Liedeman alleges they either manipulated the electronic spreadsheet system used for the daily bookkeeping reconciliations, or manipulated the amounts on the bank deposit slips. Both allegedly acted in common purpose.

Both face charges of fraud involving R2,066,244, with an alternative charge of theft by general deficiency. The alleged crimes were committed between
2007 and 2009.
