Uber: Violence is unacceptable

Taxi hailing app Uber says it is aware of Thursday night's violence in Sandton.

Vehicles of Uber and Taxify were petrol-bombed on West Street near the Gautrain station.


A third vehicle was also torched nearby. It's believed the vehicle belongs to a metered taxi driver.


A fourth vehicle also suffered damage.


Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says it appears the attacks are as a result of the ongoing violence between metered taxi and taxi app drivers.


In a statement, Uber spokesperson Samantha Allenberg confirms that one of the vehicles is registered to use the Uber app. 


"We are busy investigating the second vehicle.


"We are relieved to hear the driver of the first vehicle was not injured, we are reaching out to offer our support. On being notified of this incident our operations, security and law enforcement teams immediately reached out to the relevant authorities."


Allenberg says the violence aimed at their partner-drivers is unacceptable 

 

"Any situation where driver safety is put at risk is absolutely unacceptable to us. That people are choosing violence and threats against those bringing choice in transportation is completely
