The first year BSc Computer Science and Informatics student was shot and killed in the early hours of Saturday morning, allegedly by a security guard at a privately-owned accommodation where he resided.

"The cause of the incident is unclear at the moment. The South African Police Service is investigating the incident. It is important to note that the security official involved was not in the employ of the University of Johannesburg," the university says in a statement.

UJ says management has met with the family to express their sincere condolences.

In a separate incident, two UJ students drowned while river rafting at Intundla Game Lodge and Bush Spa over the weekend.

"Forty-four students were attending an awards and teambuilding event organised by a UJ Day House. Eight students acted in their own capacity to go river rafting, which was not on the official programme. It is believed the raft capsized resulting in the drowning of the two students," UJ says.

Arrangements have been made to provide counselling to students who witnessed these incidents, and to the bereaved families of all three students in support of their grief and loss.
