The British government has ordered production of a new coin to commemorate leaving the European Union next month, after a previous batch was melted down when Brexit was delayed.

One million coins were reportedly melted down.

The 50 pence coin will be inscribed with the EU exit date of January 31, and the words "peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations".

The decision to make a fresh batch as taken in the wake of the Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson's victory in last week's general election.

He has promised to finally "Get Brexit Done".

Ministers in the Privy Council, an advisory group to Queen Elizabeth II, made the decision at a meeting on December 17.

The coins will be made in gold, silver and cupro-nickel. It is not known how much the new batch will cost.
