UK pledges R50 million to Solidarity Fund

The United Kingdom has donated R50 million to the Solidarity Fund to help in the fight against coronavirus.
High Commissioner Nigel Casey alongside Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Nomalungelo Gina signed the donation on Monday.
The fund has been specifically given to support projects supporting and promoting women.

Chairperson of the Fund, Gloria Serobe, says the gender-based violence and women empowerment are critical spaces for the country.
"We were quite excited that you were specific about where you wanted us to apply it to. These are two critical are two critical areas in South Africa, before and after Covid.”
Interim CEO of the Fund, Nomkhita Nqweni said: “As South Africa enters the sixth month of lockdown, one thing has become clear – we are not in this alone.
"As the world struggles in unison with the global COVID-19 pandemic, many governments have looked beyond their borders to see how they can help others fight the battle.
"It’s the South African concept of Ubuntu on a worldwide scale.”
