Allegations of a WhatsApp group where matrics from several schools in Mpumalanga allegedly pay teachers for answers during exams emerged over the weekend,

Umalusi is the organisation that sets and monitors standards for education and training in South Africa.

The department has already begun its investigation after receiving an anonymous tip-off about teachers charging pupil R1500 to join the WhatsApp group.

In a statement, Umalusi says once the report has been received, it will be tabled for the consideration by the relevant structures of council.

“According to the reports, the candidates in question paid teachers to have access to the answers posted on the WhatsApp group and during toilet breaks while the examinations were in session,” the body said in a statement.

“The decision taken will eventually be communicated publicly. In order not to be pre-emptive, Umalusi is unable to communicate on this matter prior to the receipt and consideration of the DBE’s report.”
