The Department of Basic Education confirmed on Monday that the Mathematics Paper 2 had been leaked on the eve of the exam.

The paper is reported to have been leaked in Gauteng and Limpopo.

Umalusi CEO Mafu Rakometsi says the council is reviewing its security measures.

“We have always reassured the South African public that we will do everything in our power to ensure that there are no leakages. There will always be that somebody who is determined to undermine the system in the manner we are witnessing now.

“We take necessary precautionary measures, there are cameras where the question papers are stored, there is a double lock system and there is accountability in terms of who have access to the papers every step of the way.

“We will ensure that we look on areas of weakness where this paper would have leaked and having looked at the investigative report and we will try to close that gap come next year.”

Rakometsi says they are working with Basic Education to bring the perpetrators to book.

“We take this matter seriously and will do everything in our power to collaborate with the Department of Basic education, law enforcement agencies and all stakeholders, to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to book.

“We remain committed to ensuring that the integrity of this examination is protected and that the National Senior Certificate examinations conducted by the Basic Education Department remain valid and credible.”
