Umalusi concerned at impact of protests on matric exams

Quality assurance body Umalusi says there is some concern at the impact of community protests on the matric final exams.

It says close to 2 000 pupils across the country have missed an exam due to community protests.

“There has been some protest running through the country, people exercising their rights to protest. However, it is infringing on the rights of learners to access education,” says Umalusi CEO Mafu Rakometsi.

“We want to appeal to the members of South Africa to also respect the rights of our children to education. When there are examinations to be written, children should not be prohibited from accessing the examination centers.

“This is very traumatic to children, we are pleading to the citizens, this kind of approach is not welcomed and very destructive to the education of young people in our country.”

Rakometsi also revealed that the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) had prematurely released two question papers last week Friday.

“They prematurely released a Physical Science paper and the Life Sciences paper on Friday afternoon, when in fact they were supposed to be released on Monday.

“These papers were compromised and had to be replaced by the back-up papers, which were already in place, so the papers that were supposed to be written on Monday are going to be changed because they had been compromised.”
