Education quality assurance council Umalusi says the Department of Basic Education has put contingency plans in place to ensure matric pupils are able to write their final exams amid load shedding.
The quality assurer briefed Parliament's basic education committee on Tuesday after assessing the department’s readiness to administer and manage the ongoing exams.
The National Senior Certificate exams started on the 27th of October, and is once again taking place during the Covid-19 pandemic.
An additional challenge facing pupils is the rolling blackouts, with stage 4 load shedding expected to last until at least Friday.
Umalusi CEO Dr Mafu Rakometsi told the committee that he was satisfied with the department’s preparations.
“We continue to face the challenge of load shedding which is very unfortunate, students are not able to study as they should -They face traffic jams in the morning with the robots that are not working, in some instances when it rains and examinations are on you can see that there is darkness in the examination rooms.
“But based on observations that we have made as Umalusi and the reports that we have received from all nine provinces we are satisfied that the department is ready to conduct the November 2021 National Senior Certificate exams.”
