Underground tunnel fire in Johannesburg CBD extinguished

City of Johannesburg Emergency Services have (EMS) announced that the blaze that erupted in an underground tunnel in the Johannesburg Central Business (CBD)  Monday, was extinguished in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says emergency services worked throughout Monday night to extinguish the fire.

 

“We can confirm that the underground fire which started yesterday morning has been extinguished well done to team Joburg.”

 

“The city of Johannesburg firefighters,  the men and woman, worked under very difficult conditions throughout the day and overnight to make sure that the fire is extinguished.”

 

The cause of the fire is still unknown as EMS last located the fire within the 3km stretch of the tunnel.

“The area will be inspected for air quality and structural integrity before our colleagues from City Power can be allowed in.”

 

The fire affected electricity supply to most of the Johannesburg CBD, Booysens, and Selby.

 

Mulaudzi adds that roads around the affected area still remain cordon off on Tuesday morning.

 

“We also want to urge all our motorist who are driving around the area that the road is still closed and they need to find alternative routes.”
