Uneasy calm returns in Slovo Park after truck looted
Updated | By Masechaba Sefularo
The driver of a truck looted on the N12 on Thursday morning described how violent Slovo Park protestors forced him out of the vehicle before setting it alight.
The highway was reopened to traffic around lunchtime following mop-up operations to remove the rocks and rubble used by protestors to barricade the busy road.
Melusi Geba said he now fears losing his job.
The smoke from the truck he was driving bellowed as it continued to burn hours after the incident.
Geba said he tried in vain to escape the violent mob.
“We tried to make a U-turn, but the truck got stuck. They started throwing stones, and we just ran, and that’s when they started looting the truck.”
Geba and his three assistants were also robbed of their personal belongings.
“The minute I left the truck, they took everything. They took our phones, invoices, our overalls and the jack and fire extinguishers.”
He said they were on their way to Germiston to deliver their cargo of sweets and crisps.
“This is bad. This means our jobs are now at risk because with the truck burnt, there’ll be nothing for us to do,” he lamented.
After nearly a week of sporadic violence, the situation here remains tense, with police on standby in case of another flare-up.
