President Cyril Ramaphosa says the special Covid-19 social relief or distressed grant has been established to assist unemployed citizens affected by the pandemic.

It’s part of the massive R500 billion economic stimulus package announced by Ramaphosa on Tuesday evening.

“The Department of Social Development will issue the requirements needed to access and the application for this funding,” said the president.

Ramaphosa said government recognises that food distribution of the state is not adequate to meet the massive need since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The South African Social Security Agency will within days implement a technology-based solution to rollout food assistance at scale, through vouchers and cash transfer to ensure that help does reach those who need help faster and immediately,” says Ramaphosa.

The president says the Department of Social Development in partnership with the Solidary Fund, NGOs and local community structures will distribute 250 000 food parcels to distressed communities across the country.
