Unions issue SAA with strike notice
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and the SA Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) have issued South African Airways (SAA) with a 48 hour strike notice.
The decision comes after SAA issued a section 189 notice to employees that could see some 900 workers retrenched.
"What this means is that we will be embarking on the mother of all strikes at all SAA and SAA Technical operations nationally, beginning on Friday," ACCA President Zazi-Sibanyoni Mugambi told a press conference in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, SAA executives appeared before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) to account for the ailing national air carrier’s failure to present its financial statements.
SAA acting chair Thandeka Mgoduso told MPs that retrenchments could save the airline up to R700 million.
