Unions want probe into Prasa ‘corruption’

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) and its affiliate the National Transport Movement (NTM) claim to have uncovered corruption of about R5 million at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

NTM’s General Secretary Ephraim Mphahlele says former Minister of Transport Dipou Peters tried to stop an ongoing investigation into mismanagement and corruption at Prasa when she dissolved the board, and called on the current board to complete the investigation.

SAFTU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says the corruption at Prasa is further proof that the state has been captured.

“The state as a whole, not just Jacob Zuma, Malusi Gigaba, Sfiso Buthelezi and a few others, the state as a whole has been completely domesticated and stolen from the hands of South Africans. A coup has already taken place in South Africa and this has been done by an elite led by President Jacob Zuma.”

Vavi says they will look at the report released by the Public Protector into monies given to ABSA by the apartheid government. In a report released on Monday, Busisiwe Mkhwebane said the loan was unlawful and ordered the money to be paid back.

“Corruption is corruption whether they have ANC or DA colours, let them share the same prison cell with Jacob Zuma. SAFTU will look at the report that has just been released by the public protector. We will have to do something. Our state has been stolen by the thieves themselves, that is why President Zuma wants to establish an inquiry to investigate himself.”
