Prospective students have until 23 January to apply and 30 January to register.

Student protests and industrial action by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) has hindered the registration process over the past week.

Chaos erupted after hundreds of students gathered at Unisa's Sunnyside campus in Pretoria to register but was barred by Nehawu.

The union is demanding a salary increase of 12%, while the university is offering 6.5%.

The Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) and the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) also staged demonstrations requesting the institution to allow walk-in applications.

Unisa's acting Registrar, Professor Michael Getemane, says the extension of deadline allows the tertiary institution to start processing applicants.

"This will allow us to process those applications so that admissions can commence. Allowing students to apply until Tuesday will give us a fair chance to process all of these applications so that student can register."
