UNISA sends its registrar packing

The University of South Africa has announced the axing of its registrar Professor Steward Mothata with immediate effect.
The university confirmed his termination in a statement on Friday.
Mothata was provisionally suspended earlier this month amid complaints of dishonesty, the abuse of his office and making false statements in public.
Governance at the country’s oldest university has been in the spotlight over the past few months amid claims of maladministration and tender fraud.
An independent report commissioned by the Department of Higher Education recommended the institution be placed under administration.
"In dealing with this matter, the university is adhering to its abiding principle and practice of not commenting on matters between itself and its employees in the public domain. If there is any further matter that Unisa wishes to communicate to its former employee, Prof Mothata, it will direct such communique to him,” Unisa said in a short statement.
