University of Limpopo resume classes following violent student protests
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The University of Limpopo has refuted claims that academic activities were suspended following a violent protest on Wednesday.
Furious students went on the rampage after the National Students Financial Aid Scheme and the university management failed to pay rent for students who reside off-campus.
Students claim the rent was last paid in February.
On Wednesday some buildings at the institution were set alight by angry protestors, who overpowered the security guards and police and stormed the campus.
Staff members and some students who were not taking part in the protest had to be escorted out by security.
University spokesperson Victor Kgomoeswana says the University of Limpopo says the issue is between NSFAS and the landlords who have kicked out students over rent non-payment.
"There was a protest over off-campus allowances by a tiny group of students on Wednesday, resulting in damage to property, but the management of the University. A team from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme is attending to the matter. We understand that people can be aggrieved by non-payment, but we are a public university and operate under the DHET. So does NSFAS."
