Some of the cases were reported after at least 11 people became ill after eating breakfast at Old Town Italy in Umhlanga.

The SA Poultry Association has cleared the restaurant's egg supplier, saying their eggs were not the source - after conducting tests.

Another resident says 15 of her family members became ill when they consumed a pudding made with egg at a family event recently.

Times Live is also reporting that four children at a creche in Cowies Hill were confirmed to have salmonella food poisoning.

eThekwini's Msawakhe Mayisela says they're still trying to get to the bottom of the outbreak.

"We are monitoring the situation. In the event that there is new information that is coming up and something [new is found] - we will communicate immediately," he said.

The Health MEC is expected to address the issue at a press conference later this morning.
