Urgent call for Gauteng residents to cut water consumption

Randwater says reservoir levels have significantly dropped after an Eskom substation caught fire on Wednesday.

A cable which supplies power to Randwater's Vereeniging and Suikerbos water treatment plants was damaged during the fire.

This led to no water being pumped on Wednesday and brought water supply to several reservoirs across Gauteng to a major halt.

Randwater spokesperson, Eddy Singo, says the cable has since been restored, but water levels remain very low in several reservoirs.

On Thursday morning, Singo made an urgent call on residents across Gauteng to cut their water usage until further notice - despite the hot weather.

"So, things like washing cars for now should be stopped. We know that the temperatures are very high as we speak, but we depend on them (consumers) to restore reservoir levels."
