A variety of motorised devices, including but not limited to drones, are being used to carry bait, and some recreational anglers are also using motorised electric reels.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment says the use of drones for fishing and baiting is not allowed.
In a circular, they say it has come to their attention that a variety of motorised devices, including but not limited to drones, are being used to carry bait, and that some recreational anglers are also using motorised electric reels.
"These devices are prohibited for us of angling in terms of the Regulations promulgated in terms of the Marine Living Resources Act," says Departmental spokesperson, Albi Modise.

He adds: "The Department is concerned about the conservation status of several shark and fish species targeted by these illegal methods."
Modise says the Department is allowed to confiscate drones used for fishing.
"Recreational angling is an activity that can be enjoyed by all South Africans, regardless of socioeconomic status.
"The regulations that govern recreational fishing were designed to limit the cumulative impact of this activity and to ensure that it remains sustainable, ethical, and with minimal adverse impact on our aquatic environment," he notes.
