Vaal Dam waits for Lesotho water
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The Department of Water and Sanitation says it's waiting for water from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) to replenish dropping Vaal Dam levels.

The Lesotho Highlands Project is up and and running once again, after inspection was completed at the tunnels.
These LHWP tunnels transport water from dams in Lesotho into the Vaal River system.
The tunnels were closed for a scheduled maintenance and inspection from 1 October until 30 November.
During the two-month shutdown, Vaal dam levels dropped to a record low of 44,66% in November.
The Vaal Dam is currently standing at 40,26% - following a third heatwave of almost a week and isolated showers.

However, Departmental spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, has reassured South Africans that there will be no need to impose water restrictions.
"The Vaal Dam has declined to 40,26% but we must always remember that the Vaal Dam is but one of 14 dams that comprise the Vaal Integrated System."
"The tunnel from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project that was closed from the 1st of October to the 30th of November has been recharged and the water has begun flowing."
