Vadi welcomes car-free Church Square
Updated | By Neo Motloung
As Transport Month comes to an end, the MEC of Transport in Gauteng Ismail Vadi has welcomed a move by the City of Tshwane to declare Church Square a car-free zone.
Mayor Solly Msimanga revealed the newly revamped square in Pretoria on Friday.
The city says phase one of the renovations cost R28million.
Vadi says he is excited by Tshwane’s efforts to change the urban landscape.
"We have to make our cities accessible for little children, for healthy adults for ageing people and disabilities," says Vadi.
Vadi believes the cities are not for cars but for the people who live in them.
"Those who are car owners must understand they have to park their cars somewhere and walk in the city and walk to work."
Vadi says he is happy with the modernisation of the city’s transport system but would like it to happen at a faster rate.
