Vavi: We need to get the poor to speak in one voice

The
South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu), together with over 100 affiliate working-class structures, will organise a
national total shutdown in March.
The aim of the total shutdown is to organise the pleas of the working-class majority, says Saftu’s general-secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.
Vavi briefed the media on the federation’s program of action at its headquarters in the Johannesburg CBD on Thursday.
Vavi says the country is known as the capital of action protest with close to 2000 taking place a year – and the total shutdown is meant to coordinate the different protests.
“But the central lesson we learned we need get the poor to speak in one voice.”
Vavi says the shutdown will take place in major city’s and towns across the country.
“We will stay in town, we will sleep in down. We will demand that the government respond to these worsening social and economic crises.”
He adds in April Saftu will meet to review its 2019 program and announce a day to occupy the land.
