Fourteen crew members on board a vessel docked in the Port of Durban have tested positive for Covid-19.

A handout picture released by the Suez Canal Authority on March 29, 2021 shows tugboats pulling the Panama-flagged MV 'Ever Given' (operated by Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine) container ship, a 400-metre- (1,300-foot-)long and 59-metre wide vessel, lodged

The Eaubonne vessel arrived in Durban from India on Sunday.

The vessel is under lockdown with all crew members on board.

"As a requirement for the next port of call, all crew members of the vessel Eaubonne were tested for Covid-19 and cleared," said Transnet in a statement on Tuesday.

"Upon arrival at the Port of Durban, as a standard precautionary measure all crew members were tested and 14 of the crew members tested positive.”

The SOE has also confirmed that the chief engineer of the ship died following a heart attack.

This comes after the Eastern Cape Department of Health reported revealed that several crew members from ships in the Gqeberha port tested positive for Covid-19.
