The South African Weather Service has confirmed that the rainfall recorded last year was the lowest in the 112 years it has recorded rainfall across South Africa.

The South African Weather Unit Manager for Climate Information, Elsa de Jager, said they recorded an average rainfall that was some 200 millimetres less than the annual average.

"2015 was absolutely the driest year on record that we have from 1904 and the total rainfall on average that we've calculated for South Africa is 403 millimetres," she said.

De Jager said the average rainfall that is expected in the country per annum is 608 millimetres.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana was expected to brief the media on the country's grain situation and the readiness to import grains following the drought.

Zokwana on Friday met with Grain SA, NAMC, Transnet, and Maize Trust following a meeting with AgriSA, AFASA and NAMC on Monday.

According to the department, the meetings aimed to reflect on the drought situation that the country is facing as part of his continuous engagement with all stakeholders.
