Police spokesperson, Granville Meyer, says two paramedics were busy attending to patients when a paramedic from a different company arrived on the scene, and the altercation ensued.
"Afterwards the guys stabbed each other, and a case of assault has been opened," says Meyer.
Meyer adds no arrests have been made, but police investigations are ongoing.
Thee Johannesburg Emergency Management Services [EMS] has condemned the incident and have called for more stringent regulations to monitor the industry.
EMS' spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, says the altercation puts the reputation of paramedics in a bad light.
"What I am worried about is the portrayal of emergency services acting like hooligans, thugs - People who walk around with knives," says Mulaudzi.
