Independent Electoral Commission CEO Sy Mamabolo has described the high voter turnout as encouraging.
The commission briefed the media as election day drew to a close on Wednesday evening.
Various voting stations across the country were still busy with less than two hours to go before the 9 pm cut-off time.
Mamabolo said all voters who arrive at the voting stations before 9 pm will get an opportunity to vote.
"The commission indicated that it will implement measures to increase the processing of voters in busy areas. We are pleased that our efforts are beginning to yield results with the length of the queues beginning to reduce.
"The commission is also pleased to report that most glitches reported earlier in the day have now been overcome, allowing electoral officials to service voters timeously".
Mamabolo also thanked the Department of Correctional Services for its assistance in the election process.
"Voting has been completed at all correctional facilities across the country. We remain grateful to the Department of Correctional Services for its ongoing assistance in ensuring that inmates exercise their democratic rights," said Mamabolo.
