This is according to an agreement reached by the authorities and community leaders.

More than 20 schools were torched and vandalised during destructive protests in June.

"Leaners from Grade R to Grade 11 have not been to school since then, we have a catch-up plan which we are going to implement which we are preparing for as from today since the agreement that schools should go back on 4 August. We have a plan that will ensure that all the learners are able to catch-up and we believe that all our learners and all our educators really want to go back to school so that we can get everyone back to normal, the Education Department's Elijah Mhlanga said.

He says Grade 12's in the area have been getting special classes the past month and they're writing mid-year exams.
