Vuwani schools remain closed
Updated | By Laila Majiet & Olivia Phalaetsile
Schools in Vuwani will remain closed until further notice, the Limpopo education department has announced.
Schools have been forced to shut its doors after violent protests broke out in the village last week.
A total of 24 schools have been torched since.
Residents are unhappy after losing a high court battle to have their area excluded from a new municipality with Malamulele.
Traditional leaders in Vuwani dragged the Municipal Demarcation Board to court in a bid to reverse the decision.
The provincial education department's Naledzani Rasila says: "There is no schooling because it is still tense in the area.
"The premier - at the education summit - announced he will expedite the repairs process to ensure teaching and learning resumes as soon as possible."
Meanwhile, the DA conducted an oversight visit to Vuwani on Monday.
DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle says the damage is "extensive".
"At least 20 000 pupils are affected. It is clear schools will not be operational this year. We are sitting with a crisis which must be attended to at a provincial and national level."
