Vuwani teachers advised to stay home
Updated | By Maidi Monareng
Teachers and children have been advised to rather stay away from schools in the Vuwani area in Limpopo, due to intimidation.
The Department of Basic Education's spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, on Monday said learners were still stranded and that the department's job was made more difficult due to challenges moving from one school to another.
"Our teachers are still being intimidated. We are seeing concerning reports that indicate that some teachers and school principals have been intimidated in various ways which makes it clear that we are not ready to resume education services in that area. Our learners cannot go to school, our teachers are afraid," he said.
Mhlanga said calm has not returned to the area, where schooling was brought to a standstill a month ago, because of community protests.
"Our hands are tied at the moment, because the situation remains tense in Vuwani and the learners there are still stranded. We wish they were part of the exams that are currently underway, but they cannot write," he said.
Children affected by the torching and damaging of schools, would have to re-do their grade next year.
Catch-up programs could still be implemented if the situation is resolved within the next two weeks.
