Walls, littering exacerbate flooding, warns emergency services
Updated | By Eva Chipa
Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi says the walls
in some residential prevents the proper flow of water – which leads to
flooding.

“The perimeter wall fences that are being constructed around our yards, they basically the ones giving us a bit of a challenge, because the water cannot flow from one residence to the next then out.”
Parts of Ekurhuleni saw heavy downpours on Monday afternoon.
It led to flooding on some roads in Edenvale.

“Yesterday we had flash floods around the area of Kempton Park, Endenvale. So far we had no challenges. We managed to attend several areas to do away with the issue of flooding in the area,” says Ntladi.
“Currently everything has subsided, we don’t have any challenges, but we still pleading with the residents across the city in general to be on high alert as well.”
Ntladi says besides the perimeter walls, littering also affects the water drainage system around the city.
“You find the storm water drain systems are basically blocked by the plastic and all the rubble. So we pleading with people to use an appropriate way of discarding their waste so that the storm water drains can remain open to be able to take the amount of water that is coming through.”
