Joburg metro police on high alert ahead of council sitting

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) says officers will be deployed to divert traffic in the CBD for the much-anticipated council meeting expected to be held in Braamfontein on Tuesday morning.
The council will sit again to elect chairpersons for the various committees after the first meeting descended into chaos last week.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says some streets in Braamfontein will be affected from 07am to 6pm.
Affected streets include “Rissik Street, Smit Street, Civic Boulevard, Hoofd Street, Joubert Street, De Korte Street, Harrison Street and Jorrisen Street,”
Fihla adds police will also be on high alert.
“Police will also be on high alert for any possible protest marches in the Johannesburg Inner City, Braamfontein, Hillbrow and around the Metro Centre vicinity.
JMPD condemns any violent behaviour and officers will deal firmly with anyone who attempts to thrash the City, or who intimidates other citizens.
We are appealing to road users to be patient and cooperative during this period,” says Fihla.
