Emergency services were called to a chaotic scene where the patients were treated after a structural collapse on West Street near Warwick Junction on Thursday morning.

The 3-year-old suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital with 9 others.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson says upon arrival they found members of the community rescuing people trapped in the building, which housed several shops.

"On arrival we found the scene very active and members of public were trying to extricate multiple people including a child of about three years old.

"There were patients that were still stuck in the rear of the actual building and together after a plan was formulated we entered the building and brought them out to safety."

Jamieson adds that a rescue dog was sent in to confirm no casualties had been missed.

"At this stage the cause for the collapse remains unknown however SAPS will be investigating further."
