The Pan African Parliament (PAP) chambers in Midrand descended into chaos when members couldn't agree on a firm leadership system for the body's bureau.

This is the third time disruptions have halted sittings since Wednesday.

On Monday, members of the continental body were at loggerheads about the election of new leadership - with some calling for leaders to be rotated rather than elected.

Members of the southern African region backed a rotation of leaders, aimed at giving each of the five regions at chance at the helm.

The Western region was opposed to the rotation, fiercely arguing for elections to proceed.

An election was set to get underway on Monday when the tensions reached boiling point.

Unable to resolve the dispute, members called for the African Union, the mother body, to intervene.

Several scuffles broke out in the chambers.

One member rose on a point of objection, calling for the AU resolutions to be adhered to.

"There is no way we are going to conduct elections if it is not by principles of the AU," she said.

"We will never allow for those elections to take place here as long as we are going against the AU."

African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Pemmy Majodina was almost kicked in the face when she tried to intervene in one scuffle.

Majodina has since accepted the apology of the fellow PAP member after threatening to lay criminal charges for assault.

"I have no qualms in accepting an apology because this was a very hot fight.

"I was not fighting. It might happen that I was caught up in that crossfire," she told the SABC outside the chambers.

One PAP member claimed there were weapons in the chambers, claiming they were being held hostage.

South Africa's National Council of Provinces chairperson Amos Masondo can also be heard calling a member to order for questioning South Africa’s capability to host the continental body.

Proceedings were adjourned for a consultation between the election ad-hoc committee, the three candidates for presidency and the chairpersons of the various caucuses.
