Liquor outlets opened their doors from 9 am on Monday after the government allowed the sale of alcohol between Monday and Thursday.

Hundreds of customers were already queued outside Makro in Woodmead waiting for the clock to strike.

Customer number one had been waiting outside the franchise since 3 am.

"I'm not stocking, it's for me because I celebrated my birthday on the 9th (of May) so today it's almost about me.”

She said she went to the store to restock.

Liquor Director at Makro Kevin Maier says they restricted the number of sales per customer, but that there's no need for customers to panic-buy.

"it allows them to buy 6 cases of beer or ciders, 5 cases of wine as well as 12 bottles of spirits.

"They can buy a combination of these up to 120 litres as a maximum."
