President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday bestowed the 2019 National Orders Awards on distinguished local citizens and eminent foreign nationals who played an important role in South Africa.
The ceremony, held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, celebrated 25 years of democracy.
"I welcome all South Africans here today as our country prepares to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the achievement of freedom and democracy,” Ramaphosa said.
"It is fitting that we recognise also the contribution of eminent foreign nationals who contributed to the achievement and advancement of our freedom."
In honour of the country's diversity, a group of students honoured the recipients in the eleven official languages.
The first honour was awarded posthumously to a 9 year old boy, Thapelo Tambeni from Soshanguve who died tragically after saving his friend from drowning in a construction pit.
