WATCH: Eersterust pupils burn school property ‘to keep warm’
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona has confirmed that three pupils have been fingered for the burning of school property.
This comes after a video on social media showed pupils burning school materials to “keep warm“ behind the school toilets.
In the video, bathroom buildings can be seen with broken windows, dirty walls and a collapsed wall.
Mabona says the three pupils will face disciplinary hearings.
"It is quite disturbing that learners would have an opportunity to burn school property. The disciplinacry process has already commenced and this is quite a serious offence which might lead to expulsion. We will be working very closely with parents and then necessary discipline process will then unfold but it is quite sad, and we would want to discourage learners from doing such things as furniture must be used by other learners as well."
He adds that the costs of the damage still need to be calculated.
"Our officials are still conducting necessary assessments and they will be in a position to provide more information in due time."
The school has been guided on how to manage the identified learners.
