The MMCs, including the chief of staff, on forced out of their offices by the EFF on Thursday morning.

This follows the resignation of Mayor Randal Williams on Monday, who later made a U-turn, indicating that his resignation will only be effective from 28 February.

The resignation follows pressure from the DA’s coalition partners following a series of scandals, including adverse findings by the auditor general on the finances of the city.

The EFF’s regional chairperson Obakeng Ramabodu says the mayor’s resignations means the MMCs cannot longer serve.

"Today went to the Tshwane House to ask the MMCs to vacate office because they are no longer legal, in terms of the Municipal Structures Act they must be dissolved. The mayor is confusing the residents because he says he is still the mayor, he is resigning on the 28 February, he is on special leave and he also appointed an acting mayor.

"On social media he is still acting as the mayor, we don't know where he is operating from."

Ramabodu says they have written a letter to the speaker of council to request him to convene a special sitting to elect a new mayor.

"This city has been in a crisis since 2016, from Solly Msimanga, Stevens Mokgalapa, Abel Tau and now Williams. As EFF we need someone different, who is not conflicted to multi-party arrangements, someone who will put the interests of the residents first."

However, Mayoral spokesperson Sipho Stuurman has labelled the actions by EFF as unacceptable.

He says by removing the executive from office the councillors broken their code of conduct.

"This is political stunt by the EFF, and they ambushed us, they had camera crews with them which means their aim is to humiliate our staff on live TV/ Williams resigned on his own and he was not pushed out from council.

"They breached the code of conduct by attacking the MMCs, for EFF to take upon themselves to remove staff that is an illegal act and that is a breach of code of conduct to uphold the constitution and the rules, policies of the City of Tshwane."
