He tasked his Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) for Finance, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, to present to the Executive Council a detailed plan on all sectors that have the potential to create employment, exports and empowerment - including jobs in the township economy within the first 100 days.

Speaking on the side-lines of SOPA, Ramokgopa said one of the initiations his department will undertake is township farming to boost economic activity in townships.

In his address to the people, Makhura said this forms part of the plan by the Department Social Development to end hunger in the province within the next decade.

"The full potential of urban agriculture will be unlocked to feed the poor and ensure that no one goes hungry," said Makhura.

Jacaranda FM News spoke to a township farmer, Tisetso Kgabele, who is based in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.

Kgabele said one of the hindering processes of being an emerging farmer based in the township, is the disconnection between government departments that are meant to help farmers.

One of her concerns is the security of her produce in the township.
