He was in Blybank to launch a crime combating and reaction team, which will see police members attempt to stabilize the area amid a gold strike which started in November.

Unions NUM, AMCU and Solidarity all downed tools in the same month, with NUM and Solidarity subsequently reaching an agreement with Sibanye Stillwater.

Both unions signed a R750 and R800 a month wage increase.

AMCU has continued with its strike action after its demand for a R1000 increase for each member was denied.

The strike has been marred with violence.

At least nine people have died as a result of the industrial action, while 60 homes have been burned down since the beginning of the strike last year.

Community members refused to go to the Blybank sports ground, where the event was held, saying that they were not invited.

Cele addressed an empty tent with only a few police officers in attendance.

“I am giving you a very strict instruction here. I want all those people who broken the law, including those who burnt the houses to be arrested. What will make peace here is to address the perpetrators of violence,” said Cele.

Other attempts by Cele to interact with the community after his speech were met with anger.

Amcu is adamant that it will not back down from its list of demands and that its workers have no intention of returning to work.
